NAIROBI, July 31 (Xinhua) -- England international Mike Friday has resigned as Kenya Rugby sevens head coach.

Friday, send in a letter to Kenya Rugby Union, late Wednesday saying he will not be able to continue with his job, which he had a year to run after he signed a two-year contract in 2012.

""It is 'with heart' that I and Chris Brown (the New Zealander strength and body conditioning coach) that we have not taken this decision lightly,"" said Friday in a letter to Union chairman Mwangi Muthee.

""Kenya Sevens team are a fantastic group of players and it has been a privilege for both Chris and me to have worked with them all. They are precious assets that need to be given the support and direction by Kenyan Rugby in order to maximise their potential.""

Friday was appointed Kenya coach in May 2012 taking over from Kenyan Benjamin Ayimba. He led the Kenya Sevens team to one of its best performances in Wellington New Zealand in February during the International Rugby Board (IRB) World Series in which the country wound up third losing to England 19-24 in extra time.

He is also credited with making policy changes in the management of the team.

Friday, in his letter cited Kenya's insufficient funding and dissatisfaction with some directors of the KRU whose past spats with the coach were always in the public domain.

In fact one director Philip Jalang'o even went public sacking the Englishman before the decision was rescinded by KRU Chairman Mwangi Muthee.

Friday led Kenya to finish fourth, for the second time at the Sevens World Cup in Moscow, where they lost to Fiji in the third place playoff. New Zealand won the tournament beating England in the finals. He has been hugely successful; and a darling to many Kenyan fans.

""With yourself (Muthee) and Gabriel Ouko, Treasurer and former director of national squads our relationship has been cordial. But the interference from certain individuals has made it impossible for Chris and me to run a professional performance programme.

""Our view is that they have continually sabotaged and compromised our strategy and planning; this has not been in the best interests of Kenya Sevens Rugby,"" he said.

Friday also said false promises by the union was to blame for his decision to walk away.

""Inspite of numerous requests, the lack of transparency over last year's budget is a matter we have found impossible to manage. This trend has continued for the start of the season and consequently it is impossible for us to plan properly with certainty and run a performance programme and respect gained from last season.

""The Kenya 7's squad has been a credit to their country and has coped remarkably well given all the many distractions and disruptions they have had to deal with along the way. They are a fantastic group of players and it has been a privilege for both Chris and me to have work with them all.

""The players are precious assets that deserve and need to be given professional support and direction by Kenyan Rugby in order to maximise their potential,"" he said.

""We truly hope the KRU does that and we wish them well on their journey and Muthee is certainly the individual to lead the Kenya Rugby evolution.""

He said preparation for the 201314 IRB World Sevens Series must be an absolute priority now and they wished Kenya the best of luck on that journey.

""I will be exercising my right to terminate my agreement with a one month's notice,"" added Friday. Muthee is away to Dar-es-Salaam on a business trip and said the board will look at the letter in full and make a final statement.

Recently, Muthee stated there was no way Friday was to leave the technical bench and was expected to stay to train local coaches with a possibility of guiding Kenya to the 2016 Olympics. But that is now water under the bridge.
