ROME Nike Presto Mens , Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Italy's seas are endangered by untreated sewage and marine litter, Legambiente environmentalist organization reported Friday.

Every summer for the past 30 years, Legambiente's Goletta Verde (Green Schooner) vessel sails all around the Italian peninsula with volunteers and scientists, collecting water samples and testing them for bacteria and pollution.

Of 260 water samples taken all along the Italian coastline, 105, or 40 percent, were contaminated with bacteria from sewage far above EU safety limits, the environmentalists said at the presentation of their findings in Rome.

This year's Goletta Verde staffers were reporting at the end of a two-month, 7,412-km circumnavigation of the country that began in the northwestern Liguria region in June and ended in the northeastern Friuli Venezia Giulia region in July.

"Italy's seas continue to suffer from numerous dumpings of untreated sewage," Legambiente scientific director Giorgio Zampetti said.

This "grave situation" is compounded by marine litter and "ongoing environmental illegality," Zampetti said, adding that the environmentalist group was filing 11 reports on 38 locations for prosecution under Italy's environmental crimes law introduced in 2015.

Another huge problem, Legambiente said, is marine litter -- plastic bags, bottles, styrofoam, etc. -- that float around or end up on beaches due to mismanaged trash disposal, substandard waste treatment, and people knowingly dumping their trash overboard or on the beach.

Marine litter is not only toxic, but also kills animals, such as seabirds and endangered marine turtles who mistake it for food and then choke on it.

Lastly, Legambiente reported that climate change is causing the Mediterranean Sea to heat up and become more salty.

As a result, it has become a more welcoming environment to over 800 non-Mediterranean species.

These include tropical crabs and invasive seaweed, according to Legambiente.

PARIS, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- Seven candidates, veterans of the French right-wing party, will defend their chance to book the conservative ticket for the presidential contest in a televised debate scheduled later on Thursday.

The short-list of nominees for the primary includes former President Nicolas Sarkozy and key players of his government five years ago: former Prime Minister Francois Fillon, former foreign minister Alain Juppe, former agriculture minister Bruno Le Maire, and ex-ecology minister Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet.

Jean-Francois Cope, former president of the conservative party UMP, and Jean-Frederic Poisson, head of the Christian Democratic Party, will also compete in the primary.

The debate is widely seen as a showdown between Juppe, the polls' favorite, and Sarkozy who lags behind.

"This kind of televised debate rarely change (opinion) trend unless one of the candidates will make a mistake or an unexpected event will happen," Laurent Neumann, political analyst told BFMTV news channel.

"Sarkozy who is trampling in polls, needs to consolidate his second rank. In Juppe camp, there are two instructions:no triumphalism and not making risks," he added.

A Harris Interactive poll released on Oct. 6, showed 39 percent of voters supported Juppe in the primary race while Sarkozy is expected to garner 35 percent of the vote.

A month earlier, the pollster showed the two contenders neck-and-neck on 37 percent.

In addition, some 600 centrists from UDI party on Wednesday voiced backing for the former top diplomat.

Launching his campaign by the end of August, Juppe, 71, promised reforms to "bring hope" to discontent public whose outlook remains clouded by continued rise in unemployment.

"I will never exploit fears or appeal to people's baser instincts. I want to bring hope," Juppe said during a recent rally outside Paris. He has positioned himself as a unifier and a moderate.

In a contrasted tone, his hardline rival Sarkozy, 61, is veering to the far-right with a harsh tone on immigrants, which according to him pose threat to France's identity and security.

Having equal time to speak, the seven candidates will have about 17 minutes to defend their potential presidential credentials. Each one will introduce himself in one minute.

During the about two-hour debate, they will answer questions of journalists from TF1 channel, RTL radio and the daily Le Figaro on economic challenges and security issue.

Supporters of centre-right parties will elect their candidate in two-round vote on Nov. 20 and 27.

LOS ANGELES, March 4 (Xinhua) -- Los Angeles police are investigating whether a knife purportedly found on the property once owned by retired American football player O.J. Simpson is a piece of evidence or if the story of its discovery was ""bogus from the get-go,"" a police captain said Friday.

The knife would be subjected to testing for hair, DNA, serology and other forensic evidence, said Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Capt. Andy Neiman, who declined to describe the knife in detail.

""It is a knife; it is not a machete,"" Neiman said at a news conference in front of police headquarters.

Despite Simpson's acquittal of double-murder, the LAPD still considers the 1994 murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman an open case, Neiman said.

The case is not considered closed until there is a conviction, he said.
