ISLAMABAD, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds of shops were burnt to ashes in a high-intensity fire that broke out in a market in the Pakistani capital of Islamabad on Wednesday, officials and local reports said.

Zeeshan Naqvi, deputy mayor of Islamabad, told Xinhua that the fire broke out in the Sunday Market after a sweeper torched some trash near a makeshift cloth stall. The fire later spread to the nearby cloth section of the market.

There was no report of casualties as the market was closed on Wednesday.

"Nobody was affected by the fire because it was an off-day in the market, so there was no vendor or customer present in the market when it was engulfed by the fire," said Naqvi. Local reports said that over 600 shops were burnt in the accident, while Naqvi put the number at more than 1,000 shops.
